Over the holidaze, one of our JBA crew visited Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida. In fact, Garlits is still actively involved in the sport of drag racing, serving as a mentor and ambassador for the next generation of racers. Gary Medley has been a friend, ally, and contributor to the performance community for decades, and he has made a significant contribution to it. Garlits was responsible for the creation of the world’s first rear-engine Top Fuel car, which positioned the engine and trans behind the driver.ĭon Garlits set a new quarter- mile EV record by driving Swamp Rat 38, a 1,500-pound dragster with an 800hp electric motor, to 189.03 mph in his car. With the legalization of nitro in 1964, he became the first person to reach 200 mph. During his reign, Garlits set a world record by driving his car at 180 mph in 8.90 seconds.
